EMTs who are seeking employment as an EMT in Orange County must successfully complete an OCEMS approved EMT Expanded Scope Accreditation course based on the OCEMS Policy 315.00. OCEMS Expanded Scope of Practice Includes:

  • Orange County EMS System
  • Orange County EMS Policies Regarding Patient Care and Transport
  • Endotracheal Tube and Tracheostomy Tube Suctioning
  • Glucometer Use
  • MDI Assistance
  • Auto-Injector
  • 12-Lead EKG Placement
  • IV Set-Up and Monitoring
  • Skills Assessment and Post-test

*Must pass post-test with a score of 80% or better

24 HOUR EMT REFRESHER COURSE

This EMT re-certification course meets the state required hours to recertify your EMT license.

COURSE HOURS

(3) –  8 Hour Days

This course is broken down into three (3), eight (8) hour sessions spanning three (3) consecutive days. In order to receive your course completion certificate, you must attend all hours. No exceptions.

LAPSE IN CERTIFICATION INFORMATION

Lapse of less than six (6) months:

Obtain at least twenty-four hours of continuing education hours (CEH) from an approved continuing education provider or successfully complete a twenty-four hour refresher course from an approved EMT-I training program and submit a completed skills competency verification form.

Lapse of six (6) months or more, but less than twelve (12) months:

Obtain at least twenty-four hours of continuing education hours (CEH) from an approved continuing education provider or successfully complete a twenty-four hour refresher course from an approved EMT-I training program and submit a completed skills competency verification form and complete an additional twelve (12) hours’ continuing education for a total of 36 hours of training.

Lapse of twelve (12) months or more, but less that twenty-four (24) months:

Obtain at least twenty-four hours of continuing education hours (CEH) from an approved continuing education provider or successfully complete a twenty-four hour refresher course from an approved EMT-I training program and submit a completed skills competency verification form and complete an additional twenty-four (24) hours’ continuing education for a total of 48 hours of training and pass the National Registry written and skills certification exam.

Lapse of greater than twenty-four (24) months:

Complete an entire EMT-I course over again.

EMT SKILLS COMPETENCY VERIFICATION TESTING

Verification of skills competency shall be valid for a maximum of two (2) years for the purpose of applying for recertification. The skills requiring verification of competency are:

  1. Patient examination, trauma patient
  2. Patient examination, medical patient
  3. Airway emergencies
  4. Breathing emergencies
  5. CPR/AED
  6. Circulation emergencies
  7. Neurological emergencies
  8. Soft tissue injuries
  9. Musculoskeletal injuries
  10. Obstetrical emergencies
